Justice J. Clinton Peterson was born in Winchester, Idaho and graduated from the University of Idaho School of Law in 1951. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War and took the California bar exam while still in the service. After passing the bar, he worked as a deputy district attorney in Solano County for two years before going into private practice for 30 years. He handled a variety of cases, including family law, personal injury, eminent domain, and will contests. In 1988, he was appointed to the First District Court of Appeal and served there until 1998.
