Stephen Kane is a retired Associate Justice of the Fifth District Court of Appeal in Fresno. He grew up in San Mateo, California and had a loving family. His mother, Mary Catherine Galligan -Kane, and his father, who was a retired member of the Court of Appeal First Appellate District, had a big influence on him. His father was appointed by President Reagan to be the Ambassador to Ireland. Stephen Kane is married to Brenda and they have four children. During his formal, early educational period, he attended Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, a Jesuit-run college prep school. He met lifelong friends there, including Judge Larry O'Neill.
