Justice Eran Marie Bermúdez was nominated by Governor Gavin Newsom to serve on the Fourth Appellate District, Division One on April 16, 2026. She was unanimously found to be “exceptionally well qualified”  by the Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation. She was confirmed by the Commission on Judicial Appointments and took the oath of office on May 22, 2026.   

Before her appointment to the Court of Appeal, she served as an Imperial County Superior Court judge. Her colleagues on the Superior Court unanimously elected her to serve as Presiding Judge, making her the first Latina to hold that position in Imperial County. In 2025, Justice Bermúdez was appointed by the California Supreme Court to serve as a Special Master in proceedings initiated by the Commission on Judicial Performance.

Prior to her appointment to the bench, Justice Bermúdez worked at the Office for the Prevention of Harassment & Discrimination at the University of California, San Diego, practiced as a partner at Garcia Hernández Sawhney LLP, and was an associate at Best Best & Krieger LLP.

Throughout her legal career, Justice Bermúdez has remained deeply engaged in the San Diego and Imperial Valley communities. A longstanding advocate for diversity, mentorship, and access to the legal profession, Justice Bermúdez is a past president of the San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association (SDLRLA) and the SDLRA Scholarship Fund. She is a former board member of the Tom Homann LGBTQ+ Law Association, and a member of Lawyers Club.

She has supported and mentored young people through her involvement with the Imperial County Mock Trial program and the Imperial County Migrant Speech and Debate Program. Justice Bermúdez also currently serves a member of the Chief Justice’s Power of Democracy Civic Learning Initiative advisory board. 

Justice Bermúdez was born and raised in the Imperial Valley, where she attended public schools. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science at the University of California, Irvine, and a Juris Doctor degree at UC Berkeley School of Law. 

Outside the courtroom, Justice Bermúdez enjoys reading, running, spending time with family and friends, and traveling.
