Raglan Tuttle

Associate Justice, December 1938 - July 1942

Born in Oakland, December 13, 1881, Raglan Tuttle came from a long line of lawyers. His grandfather, Charles A. Tuttle, was a California State Senator and Official Reporter of the California Supreme Court. His father and uncles were lawyers, and two of his own sons became lawyers. Tuttle was raised in Auburn and educated at the University of California at Berkeley (BL, 1905) and Hastings College of the Law (LLB, 1907). He was admitted to the California Bar in June 1906, a year before he received his LLB, and went into practice in San Francisco. He returned to Auburn and joined his father's practice. Appointed to the Superior Court of Nevada County in 1926, he served until his appointment to the Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District, in 1938. Raglan Tuttle helped organize and was the first president of the California State Association of Superior Court Judges (later known as the California Judges Association), 1929-31. He died at home July 6, 1942, while still in office.
