Campbell McGregor Lucas was born on January 8, 1925, in La Jolla, California. He passed away on May 10, 2005.

In terms of his education, Lucas completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1949. He then went on to earn his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Southern California Law School in 1952. He was admitted to the State Bar on November 3, 1953.

Lucas had a significant judicial career. He served as an Associate Justice in the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, Division 5 from September 17, 1984, to May 2, 1988. He was then promoted to Presiding Justice of the same court, a position he held from May 2, 1988, to January 6, 1991. Prior to these roles, he was a Judge at the Los Angeles Superior Court from November 13, 1970, to September 17, 1984, having been appointed by Governor Ronald Reagan.

Before his judicial appointments, Lucas had a diverse professional background. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. After his military service, he worked in private practice in Long Beach from 1954 to 1970. During this time, he also served as a U.S. Government Appeals Agent for the Selective Service System from 1967 to 1970.

It's worth noting that Lucas and his brother, Malcolm, started their private law practice in 1954. They were later joined by George Deukmejian from 1962 to 1970.
