Candace D. Cooper
Candace D. Cooper was born on November 23, 1948, in Los Angeles, California.
In terms of her education, she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Southern California in 1970. She then went on to earn her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Southern California Law Center in 1973. She was admitted to the State Bar on January 9, 1974.
Cooper has an extensive judicial experience. She served as the Presiding Justice of the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, Division 8 from November 21, 2001, to December 31, 2008. She was appointed to this position by Governor Gray Davis. Prior to this, she was an Associate Justice at the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, Division 2 from November 9, 1999, to November 21, 2001.
Before her time in the appellate court, she served as a Judge in the Los Angeles Superior Court from October 13, 1987, to November 9, 1999. She was appointed to this position by Governor George Deukmejian. Her judicial career began as a Judge in the Los Angeles Municipal Court, a position she held from 1980 to 1987. She was appointed to this role by Governor Edmund Gerald Brown, Jr.
In addition to her judicial experience, Cooper also has a professional background in law practice. She worked as an Associate at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher from 1974 to 1980.
