John A. Arguelles
John A. Arguelles was born on August 22, 1927, in Los Angeles, California.
In terms of his education, he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1950. He then went on to earn his Juris Doctor degree from the same institution in 1954. He was admitted to the State Bar on January 5, 1955.
Arguelles has an extensive judicial experience. He served as an Associate Justice on the California Supreme Court from March 18, 1987, to March 1, 1989, after being appointed by Governor George Deukmejian. Prior to this, he was an Associate Justice for the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, Division 4 from May 14, 1984, to March 18, 1987, also appointed by Governor Deukmejian.
Before his time in the appellate court, Arguelles was a Judge for the Los Angeles Superior Court from September 19, 1969, to May 14, 1984, appointed by Governor Ronald Reagan. He also served as a Judge for the East Los Angeles Municipal Court from December 4, 1963, to September 19, 1969, appointed by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Sr.
In addition to his judicial roles, Arguelles has also held several professional positions. In 1992, he was a Special Consultant for the County Board of Supervisors. He has been Of Counsel at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher since 1989. Before his judicial appointments, he was in private practice at Munnell, Mullendore, Peetris & Arguelles in Los Angeles, CA, from 1955 to 1963. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1945 to 1946.
