Joyce L. Kennard
Joyce L. Kennard was born on May 6, 1941, in Badung, West Java, Indonesia.
In terms of her education, she completed her Associate of Arts at Pasadena City College in 1970. She then went on to the University of Southern California where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in 1971. In 1974, she graduated from the University of Southern California Law Center with a Juris Doctor degree and also obtained a Master of Public Administration from the same university. She was admitted to the State Bar in December 1974.
Joyce has extensive judicial experience. She served as a Judge for the Los Angeles Municipal Court from February 28, 1986, to February 9, 1987, after being appointed by Governor George Deukmejian. She then served as a Judge for the Los Angeles Superior Court from February 9, 1987, to April 4, 1988, also appointed by Governor Deukmejian.
She was then appointed by Governor Deukmejian as an Associate Justice for the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, Division 5, where she served from April 4, 1988, to April 5, 1989. Since April 5, 1989, she has been serving as an Associate Justice for the California Supreme Court, again appointed by Governor Deukmejian.
Before her judicial appointments, Joyce had a professional background in law. She worked as a Deputy Attorney General in the Department of Justice from 1975 to 1979. She then served as a Senior Attorney for Associate Justice Edwin F. Beach in the Court of Appeal, 2nd Appellate District, from 1979 to 1986.
