Marshall F. McComb was born on May 6, 1894, in Denver, Colorado, and passed away on September 5, 1981, in Los Angeles, California.

In terms of his education, McComb attended several prestigious institutions. He received a Doctor of Law degree from Loyola University in 1936. Prior to that, he earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from Yale University School of Law in 1919. He also holds two Bachelor of Arts degrees, one from Stanford University in 1917 and another from Pomona College in 1901. He was admitted to the State Bar in February 1920.

McComb had a long and distinguished judicial career. He served as an Associate Justice on the California Supreme Court from 1956 to 1977. Before that, he was an Associate Justice on the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, Division 2, from March 13, 1937, to December 31, 1955. He also served as a Judge on the Los Angeles Superior Court from October 8, 1927, to October 18, 1937, after being appointed by Governor C.C. Young.

In addition to his judicial roles, McComb also had a significant professional background in academia and the military. He was a Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles, from 1920 to 1927. He also taught law at Loyola University. In the military, he was commissioned as an Ensign on November 24, 1917. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, and in the California Naval Militia, where he held the rank of Captain.
