Matthew T. Allen
Matthew Thompson Allen was born on September 17, 1848, in Greenville, Ohio, and passed away on October 10, 1913.
In terms of his education, Allen studied privately under the guidance of Hon. D. M. Bradbury in Winchester, Indiana. He also attended Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio. He was admitted to the State Bar in Indiana on September 17, 1869.
Allen had a significant judicial experience. He served as the Presiding Justice of the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, Division 1, from January 7, 1907, until his death on October 10, 1913. Prior to this, he was an Associate Justice in the same court from April 10, 1905, to January 7, 1907. He also served as a Judge in the Los Angeles Superior Court from December 17, 1896, to April 10, 1905.
Before his judicial career, Allen had a diverse professional background. He served as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California from 1891 to 1893. He also had a private practice with Nathaniel P. Conrey and Clarence A. Miller from 1890 to 1891. Before this, he had his own private practice from 1887 to 1890 and in Ohio from 1872 to 1886. In the mid-1890s, he was a partner of future Senator Frank P. Flint. He also served as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in the Nineteenth Indiana Circuit, Indiana.
