Mildred L. Lillie
Mildred L. Lillie was born on January 25, 1915, in Ida Grove, Iowa, and passed away on October 27, 2002.
She received her education from the University of California, Berkeley. In 1935, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She then went on to earn her Juris Doctor degree from the same university's Boalt Hall of Law in 1938. That same year, she was admitted to the State Bar.
Lillie had a long and distinguished judicial career. She started as a Judge for the Los Angeles Municipal Court, a position she held from March 17, 1947, to October 10, 1949. She then served as a Judge for the Los Angeles Superior Court from October 10, 1949, to March 7, 1958, after being appointed by Governor Earl Warren.
She then moved on to the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District. She first served as an Associate Justice in Division 1 from March 7, 1958, to July 26, 1984. She was then promoted to Presiding Justice of Division 7, a position she held from July 27, 1984, to October 27, 2002.
Before her judicial career, Lillie worked in private practice in Fresno, California, from 1939 to 1942. She then served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the United States Department of Justice in the Southern District of California from 1942 to 1946. After that, she returned to private practice in Los Angeles from 1946 to 1947. She also worked for the City Attorney's Office in Alameda, California, from 1938 to 1939.
