Richard Amerian was born on December 11, 1937, in Los Angeles, California. He passed away on November 4, 2001, while on vacation in Las Vegas.

In terms of education, Richard Amerian graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Southern California in 1959. He then went on to earn his LL.B. from the University of Southern California Law School in 1962. During his time at law school, he was part of the Law Review and was a member of the Order of the Coif. He was admitted to the State Bar on January 10, 1963.

Richard Amerian had a significant judicial career. He served as an Associate Justice for the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, Division 4 from May 14, 1982, to April 3, 1984. He was appointed to this position by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. Prior to this, he was a Judge for the Los Angeles Superior Court from August 8, 1978, to May 14, 1982, also appointed by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. He started his judicial career as a Judge for the Los Angeles Municipal Court, a position he held from February 19, 1970, to August 8, 1978. He was appointed to this role by Ronald Reagan on February 4, 1970.

In addition to his judicial experience, Richard Amerian also had a substantial professional background in private practice. From 1989 to 2001, he was in private practice. Before that, he was a partner at Ervin, Cohen & Jessup from 1988 to 1989, and at Horvitz, Levy & Amerian in Encino, CA from 1986 to 1988. He also worked as an associate at Cox, Castle & Nicholson in Los Angeles, CA from 1965 to 1970, and at Hall & Mirassou in Redondo Beach, CA from 1963 to 1965.
