Robert M. Mallano is a native of Los Angeles, California. He has had a distinguished career in law and has served as a Presiding Justice in the Division One from June 4, 2008, to February 28, 2014.

In terms of his education, Mallano completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at Yale University in 1960. He then went on to earn his Bachelor of Laws degree from the UC Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law in 1963. He was admitted to the State Bar in 1964.

Mallano has an extensive judicial experience. He served as the Presiding Justice of the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, Division 1 from June 4, 2008, to February 28, 2014. He was appointed to this position by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Prior to this, he was an Associate Justice in the same court from August 18, 2000, to June 4, 2008, appointed by Governor Gray Davis.

Mallano also served as the Presiding Judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court from 1993 to 1994 and as a Judge in the same court from 1980 to 2000. Both of these appointments were made by Governor Jerry Brown. His first judicial role was as a Judge in the South Bay Municipal Court from 1978 to 1980, also appointed by Governor Jerry Brown.

Before his judicial appointments, Mallano had a professional background in law practice. He was a Sole Practitioner in Torrance, California from 1977 to 1978. Before that, he was a Partner at Hitchcock, Bowman, Mallano & Poole in Torrance, California from 1969 to 1976. He also served as a Deputy District Attorney in Los Angeles from 1966 to 1969. His first professional role was as an Associate at Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker from 1964 to 1966.
