Walter Desmond was born on February 3, 1876, in Worcester, Massachusetts, and passed away on May 13, 1951, in Long Beach, California.

In terms of his education, Desmond graduated from Harvard University with an A.B. degree and later earned his LL.B. from Harvard Law School. He was admitted to the State Bar in February 1906.

Desmond had a significant judicial career. He served as an Associate Justice in the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, Division 3 from April 11, 1934, to November 1, 1934. He was appointed to this position by Governor Rolph. Following this, he served as a Judge in the Los Angeles Superior Court from November 1, 1934, to January 2, 1943, after being appointed by Governor Merriam.

Desmond then returned to the California Court of Appeal, this time as the Presiding Justice. He served in this role from January 2, 1943, to July 1, 1948, after being appointed by Governor Olson. Prior to these roles, he had also served as a Judge in the Los Angeles Superior Court from August 3, 1927, to April 11, 1934, appointed by Governor C.C. Young.

In addition to his judicial experience, Desmond also had a professional background in public service. He served as a Public Works Commissioner and as the Postmaster for Long Beach. Before moving to California, he practiced law in Boston from 1901 to 1905.
