Retirement of Presiding Justice Brian S. Currey
It is with deep appreciation for his distinguished service that the Court announces the retirement of Presiding Justice Brian S. Currey of Division Four of the Second District Court of Appeal. Today, February 28, 2025, marks Justice Currey's last day with the Court.
Appointed to the Court of Appeal by Governor Brown in 2018 and later elevated to Presiding Justice by Governor Newsom, Justice Currey brought a wealth of experience to the bench. Most recently, his contributions to the legal profession were recognized with the Los Angeles County Bar Association's Outstanding Jurist Award in 2024.
Justice Currey's remarkable career spans nearly three decades at O'Melveny & Myers LLP, where he litigated complex cases including the Exxon Valdez criminal case and the Vioxx products liability litigation. His commitment to public service led him to serve as Counsel to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and later as Deputy Mayor for Economic and Business Policy before being appointed to the Los Angeles County Superior Court in 2014.
Throughout his career, Justice Currey has demonstrated an unwavering dedication to improving the legal profession. As Chair of the California Civility Task Force, he has championed meaningful proposals to enhance civility in the practice of law. His service to the profession also includes roles on the California Judges Association Board and numerous other professional organizations.
The Court extends its deepest gratitude to Justice Currey for his exemplary service to the judiciary and the people of California, and wishes him continued success in all his future endeavors.
