Second District Court of Appeal Announces Retirement of Justice Elizabeth A. Grimes
The Second District Court of Appeal announces the retirement of Associate Justice Elizabeth A. Grimes from Division Eight, effective May 31, 2025. Justice Grimes has served with distinction on the appellate court since her confirmation in April 2010. Her judicial career began with her appointment to the Los Angeles Superior Court in December 1997, where she presided over dependency court, felony calendar court, and general jurisdiction courtrooms in the Stanley Mosk Courthouse and Santa Monica Courthouse. From August 2004 through March 2005, she served as a justice pro tempore to Division Four of the Second District before her permanent appointment.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Justice Grimes earned her law degree from Stanford Law School in 1980, where she served as Associate Editor of the Stanford Law Review. Before joining the bench, she was a partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher for 18 years, practicing business litigation. Throughout her judicial tenure, she has been active in legal education and professional service, including membership on the Judicial Council Appellate Practice Curriculum Committee and the Editorial Board of California Litigation. Justice Grimes' retirement marks the end of nearly three decades of judicial service to California. The Court expresses its deep appreciation for her distinguished service and wishes her well in retirement.
